Book Rec: O Jerusalem
May. 21st, 2012 10:57 pmIn publishing order, O Jerusalem is the fifth book in Laurie R. King’s Mary Russell series, but in chronological order, this one is second, filling a timeline gap from the first book, The Beekeeper’s Apprentice, when Russell and Holmes had to leave London because they were being pursued too closely by their enemy.
It’s also absolutely my favorite book of the series so far: action packed, great characters (including two fantastic newbies—possibly a gay couple posing as brothers), great character moments, delicious villains. And everything I said about descriptions of place being boring in The Moor is turned on its head because here Jerusalem/Palestine is riveting. I think the difference is that Dartmoor is mainly rather bleak and barren, largely devoid of people, while Jerusalem is teeming with interesting characters from all walks of life.
( Cut for squeeing and some fun quotes. )
