shadowfireflame: (Sherlock in Molly's lab)
In their recent Q&As and interviews with PBS, Sherlock writers Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss let fans know what some of their favorite Sherlock Holmes film influences were. Specifically, they mentioned The Spider Woman (1944) and The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970). So, I borrowed them from the local library and did some research!

I’ve been enjoying going chronologically through the entire Granada series (starting in 1984 with Jeremy Brett and David Burke, then Edward Hardewicke—and believe it or not, I actually prefer Burke) on Netflix, and in short I’m really enjoying it. The series has a ton in common with the BBC’s version, not the least of which is how arresting their lead actors are when onscreen. It’s almost physically painful for me to focus on anything else when Brett/Cumberbatch is in frame. And basically that’s what I’m looking for in a Sherlock Holmes adaptation—how good is your lead? As a corollary to that, how good is their chemistry with Watson? (See my comparison of the Granada and BBC versions of Scandal here.)

Here are some of my thoughts:

Mini-Reviews )

P.S. Congratulations to the adorable Andrew Scott on his Best Supporting Actor BAFTA win (beating out fellow nominee Martin Freeman in the category) and to Steven Moffat for his special award (presented by Benedict Cumberbatch and Matt Smith; Moffat had a fanboy moment onstage).

Benedict himself has now been nominated and lost for the fourth time (Best Supporting Actor for Small Island and Best Actors for Hawking and both seasons of Sherlock). This time he lost out to Dominic West’s portrayal of incestuous rapist serial killer Fred West in Appropriate Adult, which I’m now very tempted to see—because if it beat out the acting in that rooftop scene in “Reichenbach,” it must be pretty damn good!
