...in Philadelphia, home to Ben Franklin. As Cory Doctorow writes in his blog, because their state budget has not yet been passed, the state legislature is considering closing all 54 of Philadelphia's public libraries. I'm slightly horrified at this turn of events, but it seems to be some kind of instance where they probably won't close the libraries; this is just a prodding motion from the governor to get them going on the budget. Still, the fact that they've considered this at all makes me very sad, as I've always considered libraries, and especially public ones, the perfect environment for learning. Some consider them too much of a socialist institution.

One comment by JFRANCIS was hilarious, though, on the use of Socialism:

"Sidewalks are Socialism. Why should I pay to equalize other people's walking abilities? If you can't hack rugged terrain that's your problem." Hahaha, very nice, JFRANCIS.
