Of Mice and Sherlock Holmes
Jul. 24th, 2012 03:51 pmReviews of two animated mice taking on Sherlock Holmes stories: The Great Mouse Detective and Tom and Jerry Meet Sherlock Holmes.
The Great Mouse Detective (1986)
When I first saw this movie (on VHS!) many years ago, I distinctly remember thinking, “Dear God, I’m attracted to an anthropomorphic animated mouse.” On re-watching it now, I feel much better because it’s clear it’s not the mouse; it’s the character of Sherlock Holmes, which is captured expertly here. This movie has some issues—namely a dockside scene with a burlesque dancer that I would probably slap a NSFW tag on and certainly not show to young children—but overall it is a jewel in Disney’s crown, hugely entertaining, and honestly one of the best Sherlock Holmes adaptations I’ve seen.
