Possible Take on Elementary Pilot Script
Feb. 16th, 2012 02:05 pmLook what I found! In the comments of this article about Jonny Lee Miller acting in the pilot of Elementary, someone linked to an actual script by Josh Friedman for a pilot episode. It looks like it was written back in 2000 and is on the internet for some reason.
Here (or here) is the link, or you can find it (at the moment, anyway) by just Googling "Josh Friedman Elementary 2000."
Now, I haven't read it yet, but I look forward to it (even if it turns out to be awful). Maybe it could shed some light on what a possible script of Elementary might look like now, twelve years later.
EDIT: I've read it now. It's not bad, actually. Though we got much more Watson characterization than Holmes characterization, so it's difficult to judge how well it would actually work out. I suspect the actual Elementary script will be much different, and not just because Watson will be a woman. Lots of little similarities to A Study in Scarlet/Pink, and I was glad that Mycroft made an appearance, albeit a brief one.
Casting edit: I've heard rumors that in Elementary Watson is a woman and Holmes is, indeed, a Brit living in America. These are just rumors, of course. But, damn it, one day there needs to be a female Sherlock Holmes. Pretty please, TV execs?
Casting edit 2: The rumors were correct! So Lucy Liu has been cast as Joan Watson, which is cool because I love her! Still, I'd have preferred both Sherlock and Watson to be female (or even just Sherlock), but again, I will withhold judgment until I've seen it.
While we're on the topic of adaptations of Sherlock Holmes, I highly recommend Neil Gaiman's Sherlock Holmes/Cthulu crossover short story "A Study in Emerald," available online here. It's very quick, just nine pages, and well worth it even if, like me, you have no idea about any Cthulu stuff and just enjoy Sherlock. Superb ending in particular.
