A Scandal in Bohemia/Belgravia Comparison
Feb. 14th, 2012 11:31 pmHappy Valentine’s Day, everyone! Thanks so much to
melusinahp and
appleling for my lovely sparkling glass hearts! They look so pretty on the profile page.
I just finished the Granada (1984) Sherlock Holmes episode A Scandal in Bohemia (I know, so romantic on Valentine’s Day!) starring Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes, David Burke as John Watson, and Gayle Hunnicutt as Irena Adler (as opposed to Irene, it seems, or maybe that was just the King’s pronunciation), and I figured I’d write down my thoughts comparing it to the modern BBC adaptation of A Scandal in Belgravia.
( Cut for plot spoilers and comparisons. )
In other news, that planned CBS adaptation Elementary finally has its Sherlock Holmes cast—as Jonny Lee Miller! He starred with none other than Benedict Cumberbatch in the National Live Theater’s production of Frankenstein, which I had the pleasure of seeing in movie theaters (I saw Benedict as the Creature and Jonny as Dr. Victor Frankenstein).
Anyway, while I wish that America would stop taking British ideas for TV shows and adapting them, at least we know they have a great actor at the helm (though to be honest I look forward to the day when we can have someone other than a while male playing Sherlock Holmes. I was rooting for a woman, at least, but alas).
I’m curious to see how it all ends up, though I don’t see how they can possibly compete with the BBC version. Still, I really enjoy the character of Sherlock Holmes and will take any new adaptions as they come, particularly if they’re good.
Back to my Sherlock Holmes Adaptations Masterlist: (Taxi!)
