Yes, that's precisely it--even for today, that New York scene seemed utopian, unfortunately. I know they were trying to make a contrast between Solomon's life as a free man and a slave, but that was still a bit much, and racism and danger doesn't magically disappear by changing locations.
I honestly don't think I'm that cold a person or that numbed by TV violence and horror to not appreciate real historical violence, so I have to conclude it's the filmmakers who have done something wrong somewhere in causing that distance.
