Other Sherlock Recs Lists

In compiling my own Sherlock recs lists, I owe a huge debt of gratitude to other communities, reccers, and rec lists who provide commentary (I love—no, I need—commentary on recommendations). Here is a list of ones I particularly love and have been amassing via other recommendations or random Googling when I need something to read. I’ll admit the length of this post has become a teensy bit out-of-control, but that just shows you how many awesome people there are in this fandom!

• The invaluable weekly Sunday Recdays (I haunt this like mad) and Thursday Searches at sherlockbbc—love these so much; every day has a new treat! There’s also their obsolete older tag fandom recs

• holmesian_news for its comprehensive daily updates about what’s being created in fandom (love this so much)


• The High Functioning Fangirls on tumblr, particularly this list of favorite authors, their tags search page, and fandom classics part I and part II


• The fic search and fic recs tags at bbcsherlock (and to the lovely ratherbe4gotten for putting up with my spamming when I was just getting into the fandom)


• Johnlock Fanfic on tumblr (fuckyeahjohnlockfanfic)—check out their tags list and follower favorites


• missilemuse’s tag list, classic must-reads, epic recs, five-stars tag, and my favorite: the sherlock whump rec list (yesss)


• swissmarg’s fic rec tag and bookmarks collection on AO3 (a great guide to that is here)—one of the best reccers in fandom, in my opinion. I owe this amazing reccer for finding some of the best stories I’ve read! EDIT: The recs are now on tumblr as well, with tags! Fabulous.


• The metric ton of kinky/awesome stories posted at the kink meme, sherlockbbc_fic, which I think we can thank for some of the best prompts ever. Check out their fantastic delicious archive and the prompt summaries masterlist, too!


• 221b_recs for existing and being awesome, especially the BBC tag. Check out their amazing pinboard or this spreadsheet for a masterlist of stories that have been recced


• The fic-search communities sherlock_search and holmes_finders, which are cool and useful! The latter is for all Sherlock Holmes verses, but the BBC tag is here

• For berlynnsherlock (berlynn-wohl on AO3)’s kinky recs, check out Berlynn Wohl’s Mighty (Mostly) Johnlock Recs List, which is indeed mighty to behold.


• frozen_delight has a Holmescest recs list


• sorrel_forbes has a themed recs list about time travel and other oddities


• archea2 has two superb compilations of Lestrade/Sherlock recs: part 1 and part 2


• Also, for all your Omegaverse needs, check out cuddlyjumper’s excellent Omegaverse masterlist


• And finally, for more general/desperate searches, tumblr’s sherlock-fic-rec tag or just searching on the Sherlock (TV) tag on the AO3—you can manipulate the data with the “Sort and Filter” function on the right sidebar to search for specific tags or kinks. I use the “Sort by: Wordcount” filter constantly to find longer stories.

Um, if you're just starting out, I can give you some beginner recs, if you'd like. There's a nice long list of fandom classics here (part I) and here (part II), if you want to browse some of them. Also, most fic is now on the Archive of Our Own (AO3), which is very handy and has a "download" button so you can save stories to read later on an e-reader or whatever.

This fandom can be a bit overwhelming, as there is a lot of great writing (but we are always desperate for more wonderful writers!). I think a handful of some of the most well-known stories are:

--26 Pieces, my personal favorite in which John and Sherlock get kidnapped and fall in love. (I think you have to have an AO3 account to read this one.)

--The Whore of Babylon Was a Perfectly Nice Girl, in which John learns about Sherlock's sexual past.

--The Progress of Sherlock Holmes, an epic first-person story that gets into Sherlock's head about his feelings for John.

--Two Two One Bravo Baker, an AU in which Sherlock joins John in Afghanistan and they have crazy amounts of hot sex.

--The Good Morrow verse, a very plotty story which imagines life for both John and Sherlock after Reichenbach.

--The Paradox series, in which Sherlock has pretty dark and crazy thoughts, but John loves him anyway.

--Alone on the Water, the fandom tearjerker in which Sherlock gets a brain tumor and dies.
