I just finished Togainu no Chi, an enjoyable anime for those who like anime with hot guys angsting and fighting each other, so I wanted to share it!

In a dystopian future, the city of Toshima forms the setting of a bloody battle royale. Fighters are drawn by the prize money or just coerced into competing. You win by collecting a good poker hand of card dogtags each fighter wears, then fighting the ultimate boss. Meanwhile, there’s a massive conspiracy involving a mysterious street drug called Line.

The anime is pretty heavy on innuendo between the male characters (let’s be honest, there’s only one female character in the cast). I’d call this basically badass versions of the guys from Gakuen Heaven if they were plopped into the dark, corrupt world of Deadman Wonderland. So that’s right up my alley, and it really worked for me. The chemistry between some of the characters is just off the charts; for example, I liked Shiki/Akira—or really any of the other characters with Akira.

But there were also lots of problems with this anime, such as the lack of backstory or character depth (which does improve later on), the strange camera work during battle scenes, Nano’s stupid, falsely-dire opening voiceovers about color, and the fact that only the depraved antagonists seem to be actually out of the closet. Also, a warning to the squeamish, because there is a lot of blood in this one. Whenever any character gets so much as pricked by a needle, literally a rivulet of bright red blood spurts everywhere. And the “dog”/pet character is one of the most disturbing things ever. Still, those things didn’t hinder my overall enjoyment.

I owe so many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] appleling for pointing me to this anime! Thank you for the rec!

If you’re interested, my masterlist of anime reviews is here.

Also, I just got back from watching Hugo, which should definitely be a contender for Best Picture at the Oscars.

Mmm... Shiki... yum

Togainu no Chi has lots of boy candies alright but the storyline doesn't make sense to me. Still, the battle royale-ish fights and the pretty boys are entertaining enough.

And yes, Shiki/Akira...

*licks lips* I wanna eat them for dinner!

Glad you like the anime. Wasn't really a favourite of mine (because I prefer a strong and solid storyline) but figured you'll like it well enough. And if you think some parts of this anime is disturbing, then you clearly mustn't ever watch Enzai. I couldn't make myself sit down long enough to finish that one either. The rape scenes were reallydisturbing.

OMG that picture...guh...so gorgeous. There was a scene between them, I think maybe in the third episode, where my jaw was just hanging open because there was so much UST. Did you know this anime was based on a yaoi game, which was turned into a yaoi-ish manga, which was then turned into this basically non-yaoi anime? WTF, dudes?

Ha, Enzai. I totally watched the first part of Enzai before I was way too squicked. So disturbing to me, yup. Animated guys who look like little kids just doesn't do it for me.

I definitely also prefer strong and solid storylines...but I am happy enough with hot guys fighting. :DDD

Yup. My sister played that game for a bit. But she preferred this other game tough, because the boys were hotter or something like that. Can't remember its title at the moment. But yeah, we both like Shiki a lot. Probably because of all those tight, tight black clothing.

There are a number of doujins with Shiki/Akira as its main pairing as well. I read some but that was a long time ago.

Yup, Enzai was scary
