shadowfireflame: (Sherlock in Molly's lab)
Because if you’re already going to hell, you might as well go there in style.

If you’re wondering what I’m talking about: so Omegaverse is a thing I didn’t know existed until I got into Sherlock fandom, but it may have originated with Supernatural fandom or earlier. It shares some similarities with mpreg, but many do not contain mpreg at all. Also, it’s based on wolf hierarchies, so sometimes we get some werewolf tropes thrown in there (and knotting, mmm).

Essentially, there are six genders instead of two (alpha!male, beta!male, omega!male, alpha!female, beta!female, and omega!female). Usually betas are sterile, alphas and omegas go into heat, and omegas can get pregnant. During heats, alphas are more sexually aggressive, omegas submissive, and betas more like normal people. (Rules vary based on the writer’s universe.) If you’re still confused, [livejournal.com profile] norabombay has a primer here (with a color-coded chart!), or a great explanation is on the kinkmeme here, or [livejournal.com profile] mazarin221b has a good explanation here (“Multiple orgasms and uninhibited, crazed monkey-sex are also usual,” hee!), or [livejournal.com profile] regan_v has a great discussion post here (“It can be used to comment, with delicate irony, on gender stereotypes in our own world.”).

What it boils down to is a lot of desperate, dubiously consensual sex, angsting, hurt/comfort elements, experimenting with sex and gender, and often the possibilities of mpreg and werewolf dynamics. To quote [livejournal.com profile] fresne, “One of the fun things about Omegaverse, beyond the porn, is the opportunity to play with entirely constructed genders and the social constructions that might come out of that.” Exactly. And when taken seriously, it makes for some absolutely fascinating and often incredibly sexy reading.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, I like omega!Sherlock best. It’s that loss of control, that frustration he has with his body/transport taking over during heats. When coupled with alpha!John (or Mycroft or Lestrade or Irene), the dynamic is wonderful. (I found cuddlyjumper’s excellent Omegaverse masterlist to be very helpful when compiling this list.)

So let’s have some recs. Note: please take dark, dub-con elements as a given in this verse, and please always read the warnings on each story to avoid triggering elements.

EDIT: Now separated by paring, yay!

Onto the Recs! )

If I’ve made any errors or you know of an omega!Sherlock story—or any great Omegaverse story—that I haven’t included, please, please be a dear and drop me a comment so I can read it!
