the trash containers

outside my dorm

are surrounded by a chainlink fence

and gate

so drunk people can’t climb in

and set fire to the trash

            in winter

the gate is chilled shut

and you can’t see inside

 

raccoons like to climb in the trash containers

 

i feel sorry

for the raccoon

            sitting down to a nice dinner with his family

who is squished

by a sack of beer bottles from last night’s party

coming at him

            as if lightning from on high
