Thoughts on Handwriting

Okay, I’ve been wondering about this: I keep seeing kids of people I work with typing up their homework on computers, and I think, “Wow! It’s so awesome that younger and younger kids are in tune with technology!” But…what effect is this having on, for example, something as organic as their handwriting? Handwriting is a type of art specialized to every person; it fosters creativity and pride in one’s unique skill, no matter how poor the handwriting is. (Even if you hate your handwriting, you can’t deny that it is something intrinsically yours.) Are kids still learning handwriting? Is progress slower than it used to be? Can we theoretically rid our culture of handwriting? If so, how would this affect our culture? I hope we are still teaching our kids to actually write, not just type their thoughts and have them spellchecked, and take pride in it.
