I liked the bit you didn't - I felt that it showed that studio had a pleasing confidence in both their characters and their audience, particularly by very wisely choosing not to backtrack desperately at the end which is all the obvious cheesy (and unfunny) ending would have been. I enjoyed the whole thing a great deal and could even forgive the very occasional descent into a touch of schmaltz.
