Having read the Hobbit years ago, forgotten major plot points, and then foolishly refreshed my memory, I was spoiled for the deaths of Kili, Fili and Thorin, and really wish I somehow hadn't known they were coming, because that would have been a hell of a shock. Thorin's death though, with Bilbo there, my god. Martin Freeman. Wow.

Legolas runs out of arrows. I know, right? I may have laughed a little.

Loved Galadriel's dark queen moment, because it shows she wasn't just messing around with Frodo about what she could become if she took the Ring. Also it makes it more believable that she's so weakened when you also consider she did basically transfer a significant part of her lifeforce to rouse Gandalf as well before that (that seemed the point when her energy levels really started to tank, so that's my assumption on what happened anyway). Plus she set off a few magical EMPs before that getting to Gandalf, all before unleashing what was basically a massive "GET OUT OF MY REALM!" energy pulse that threw Sauron and the 9 all the way to Mordor. What was happening before that could have been made clearer with the special effects, but I can see how she would be a hell of a lot more winded than Elrond and Saruman who were basically swatting really annoying super-powered spectral flies.

The film definitely felt much too short. People leaving the theatre were saying so too, and I didn't even get through a whole bottle of water. The extended edition is going to be a thing of majesty I suspect.

The bookends were awkward, but I could see what they were trying to do to dovetail it into the prior trilogy, something which Tolkien never would have had to do as the trilogy didn't exist yet. And since it does carry on, with the future going on with the Ring and the rise of Sauron, it almost can't feel finished, because the larger story isn't finished by the end of this Trilogy.

I'm almost hoping Peter Jackson does try to tackle some of the Silmarillion, because there's a lot in there most fans of the movie won't have ever heard about. I don't think it could ever be another massive undertaking like these two trilogies were, just because of the nature of the Silmarillion (which I haven't read myself in entirety). It doesn't form the same recognizable narrative hero cycle, it's primarily background details and world-building.

Friendship, love, family, trust, honor, staying true to yourself, having confidence in your own abilities, and having a nice meal at the end of the day.

Indeed. :-)
