I have never had any interest in an OT3 before Amanda Abbingdon's Mary showed up, and I'm fascinated by your reading of John's sexuality, because taken straight (you should pardon the expression), his angry cry in EH seems so OOC, as well as homophobic. Hearing it as a painful expression of his difficulty in admitting how much he loves Sherlock -- well, I like that a lot, and fingers crossed the show eventually lives up to it.
