*facepalm* Yes, I have read “The Fabric of Life” and enjoyed it, I just forgot to put it on the list. Now remedied! And thanks for the link to “the grand tour of Europe”—I haven’t read that one. :)
Ooh, and thanks for the link to the discussion. I’m afraid I don’t have much to add, other than Sherlock being paranoid that if John knew or if Sherlock took John with him, somebody else might find out and shoot Lestrade or Mrs. Hudson (despite all the plot holes in that theory).
I also don’t think in BBC canon that Sherlock will be gone years; it’s just too long. I think one year at most. And while I like reading about it, I don’t share the theory fandom seems to have that Sherlock is dismantling Moriarty’s empire during the hiatus. That seems like such an insanely ambitious project for one person, even with Mycroft’s help. But then what is Sherlock doing, if not that?! (Holiday in Majorca seems more and more likely...)
We will see how the writers take it! I’m dying with curiosity!
EDIT: Oh, and hoshiko_2000 has a brilliant theory (above in the comments) that Sherlock never intended to return at all in his plan. I like that theory; it's one I hadn't considered before. :)
