One question I wonder about very much regarding Sherlock's return in The Empty Hearse is the question of whether Sherlock actually ever *intended* to come back in the first place. It's possible that Sherlock's plan only covered saving John, Mrs Hudson and Lestrade's lives, and Sherlock never intended, or expected, to be reunited with John and everyone else at a later stage; either because he believed they would hate him and reject him when the learned the truth, because he was trying to avoid further hurt, because he believed his presence would put them in danger again, or simply because he didn't believe it would ever be possible. One possible spin that I could very much see this series doing is having Sherlock being *tracked down* and *dragged out* of hiding, rather than emerging from it instead.
