Oh oh oh, wow, thanks for your lovely comment! I really appreciate it and am glad to hear from a fan of the series.

I just think he didn't have confidence that Watson was an interesting person in his own right.

Ohhhh, interesting. I think you've hit on it and on why I find Burke entertaining but Hardwicke feels more right. I also feel that Brett and Hardwicke had more chemistry together than Brett and Burke, but again it's hard to judge because I've seen much more of Brett with Hardwicke.

Yes there is no doubt in my mind that it is Holmes who needs Watson and not the other way around.

That's a good point, especially, as Brett says, about the danger of Holmes overdosing. The drug thing is something I really enjoyed in the Granada series. I suppose in that way Brett's Holmes is more vulnerable than Sherlock, but both still get up to stupid things without their Watson/John. And doesn't Watson usually just...silently disapprove whenever he sees Holmes doing drugs? It's not something they talk about; it's just something that Holmes occasionally needs to do but that Watson disapproves of (usually with just his expression).

There is an interview or a commentary or something where Benedict talks more in-depth about the mannerisms he uses as Sherlock and how carefully he thinks about them, and I still haven't been able to find it. I thought it was the "Great Game" commentary and that Gatiss responded with, "Sorry I asked!" or something similar, and then Benedict got kind of defensive because he loves talking about previous incarnations of Holmes and how he's trying to honor their memory. That quote was basically what inspired me to watch this series, and it's so interesting to see the similarities and differences. The one thing they unquestionably share is a magnetic presence on screen--it's almost physically difficult for me to watch somebody else when either of them is in frame. :D
