OMG have you been busy, lol. Interesting thoughts! I've probably discussed this with you before, but with Brett, I've always felt he was the definitive 'image' of Sherlock Holmes (I even had a small crush on him for a while, didn't know until a long time after that he was ill) but BC embodies the spirit of Sherlock Holmes much better, for me. I never understood why I found the Granada version so boring, relatively speaking, when the books captivated me. Partly that I always felt half an hour was quite enough to tell most of the short stories, and they were treated far too reverentially XD
Do you think BC studied the Granada version, though? Just wondering, because I would have thought he'd be keen to avoid being seen to give a derivative performance. The steepling of hands, etc., is in canon, so I'm just curious, really...
