Long answer is long! Okay, well, for me there are two types: the more manly guys I find sexy and would consider my type for dating, and the pretty ones whom I just like looking at or want to see with other guys but don't want to personally date. And I love British guys. Fanfic pairings work for me when there's one of each type: to simplify it, I like a more manly guy with a more girly one. :)
There are very few crossovers between those two categories for me. Benedict Cumberbatch comes to mind (see icon, lol!). He is such a delight as Sherlock because I think he mixes sexiness (his deep voice, his hidden power) with vulnerability/prettiness (that hair! Those eyes! That gracefulness!). Harry Potter also comes to mind as a character who could go into either category depending on which characterization I'm reading.
Anyway--so, those in the first category...this is harder because what I consider date-able is very subjective and depends like 80% on personality and 20% on looks and things like that. I like smart, sweet, funny, easygoing, friendly, simple, strong, confident, loyal guys, normal body types (no bulging muscles), short hair. No hidden agendas, just good men. Like...Sean Astin as Sam in Lord of the Rings, basically, once he's more confident. I would date/marry that character in a heartbeat. Chris Hemsworth comes to mind (okay, minus the bulging muscles), or Sean Bean, or Rupert Graves in Sherlock. The more I think about it, I'd put Channing Tatum into this category. These characters are nice, but I don't read for them because I feel like I'm lucky to have my own in my boyfriend.
In the second category of pretty guys, I like them to be complicated, quick, very thin, graceful, vulnerable, whump-able, with long fingers and longer or curly hair and radiant eyes. Hidden dark sides, tragic pasts, all that. Basically my headcanon Draco, Elijah Wood as Frodo, almost all the anime/Kpop guys I'm obsessed with, Matt Bomer in White Collar, Tom Hiddleston as Loki. I would never want to date these guys, but I looove watching them in stuff or seeing them in relationships (with other guys). These are the characters I get obsessed with and read for.
Yesss, long answer is long, lol! Sorry! These things are kind of hard to explain for me.
