Isn't part of fandom a frustration with lack of women anything and an escape into a world where that doesn't matter? (Or for me it is.)
Yeah, that's definitely a good point. I think for me, part of the appeal of slash/genderswap is the fact that in media, it seems the female characters often aren't given the chance to be as badass/complicated/interesting as the male ones. It's the difference between "cool character who happens to be female" and "cool female, who is also a character." Their gender is a part of them, but shouldn't fully encompass everything that is interesting about them.
And then there's often a canon romance between a fascinating male character and a less-fascinating female character, while another fascinating male character is standing around with far more chemistry with the lead male than the female has, all because she isn't written as well or with as much care.
Just my opinion. I think and hope this is changing, but in the meantime there is slash and genderswap. :)
