Aha! I was beginning to think that I was the only one to find the book disappointing. Not bad, by any means, but not good enough to have me racing out to buy the others. Partly I think because the theme wasn't particularly novel, though it's probably new to young person's fiction. But mainly because the author set up some interesting issues and then bottled out. Will she kill the other nice kids to survive or won't she...? Oh look, turns out she didn't have to. Bit like "Highlander" where the bad guy conveniently kills off all the other good guys before the hero has to worry about doing it. You can get away with it in an action movie; I'm not sure that you can in a novel.

But there were good points. A lot of the background was handled well and Katniss was as you say, different if not likeable. I'll probably get round to reading the others at some point but without high expectations.
