Book Rec: The Demon's Lexicon by Sarah Rees Brennan

It took me all of a very long night, but I simply couldn't put the damn thing down! Lovely and dryly humorous writing, just as I'd expect from Maya (formerly mistful on LJ), the wonderful author of Harry Potter fanfics that were either hilarious (Draco Malfor, the Amazing Bouncing...Rat?) or creepy and chilling (Dark Side of Light). Or both.

I did feel that the funny parts and the creepy parts of Demon's Lexicon were somewhat disjointed, and the descriptions of Alan and Jaime's personalities were too similar, i.e. constantly thin and exhausted. However, I felt captivated by all four main characters (Nick, Alan, Mae, Jaime, even Gerald). I can't help but compare DL to Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments trilogy, not only because the two authors have similar backgrounds in the HP fandom but because they kind of write in a similar style. And while DL never quite reaches the level of sheer hotness that Clare presents in certain scenes (In City of Ashes, Jace offering Simon his blood, "I could have killed you," "I would have let you," just...guh), on the whole, DL is much better, with a twist that I'm pretty sure nobody saw coming but that makes perfect sense.

At any rate, I can't wait until May, when the next installment arrives!
