The Color Purple
Sep. 4th, 2009 07:50 am"I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don't notice it."
--Alice Walker, The Color Purple
Ah, The Color Purple. Probably the only book with multiple mentions of incestuous rape, pregnancy, and two suspected homicides...on the first page. But I've always loved this environmental aspect to Walker's tale of humanism--a kind of feminism that helps pull men up, too. In this passage, Shug is explaining to Celie her theory about God and how "It" takes pleasure in human happiness.
